The October session of “Joy of Work in Pangyo,” held on October 23 at the Pangyo Techno Valley Startup Campus, explored the theme “Autonomous Driving in the Age of Physical AI,” sharing insights into the technological evolution and practical know-how of the autonomous driving industry.

Hosted by the Gyeonggi Business and Science Accelerator (GBSA), the event brought together professionals working in Pangyo Techno Valley, experts in related industries, job seekers, and students to discuss the future industrial shifts driven by the convergence of AI and robotics.

In the first session, MINWOO CHA, Technical Manager at Neubility—who previously worked on the Robotics Team at Woowa Brothers—addressed the technological differences and commercialization challenges between indoor autonomous mobile robots (Indoor AMRs) and outdoor delivery robots.

He explained, “Indoor autonomous driving is a matter of technical perfection, but outdoor autonomous driving is about survival—dealing with GPS shadow zones, network latency, and battery sustainability,” emphasizing that “if communication is lost for more than 30 seconds, the entire system fails.” He also described the structural differences between SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping)-based indoor robots and vision-based outdoor robots, noting that synchronization and sensor data sampling rate management are key to ensuring accuracy and stability.

CHA also discussed the shifting investment trends between humanoid and delivery robots. It stressed that “the essence of autonomous robots lies not in decision-making but in building a solid data pipeline.” He concluded by highlighting that “it is now an open-source era where anyone can experiment,” introducing practical tools such as ROS2, Nav2, and SLAM Toolbox.

In the second session, Jinyong Jeong, CEO of Riibotics, gave a presentation titled “Developing Autonomous Forklifts in Brownfield Environments.” Jeong defined a brownfield as “an industrial site not designed for robots but built for humans,” emphasizing that precise localization, perception, and control are crucial in such settings.

He shared technical stacks needed for safe navigation in dynamic environments and real-world problem-solving cases from Riibotics’ projects. Jeong noted, “In the field, response logic and data management are more critical than sensors,” offering practical insights into brownfield operations.

The October “Joy of Work in Pangyo” seminar went beyond a typical technical event, serving as a venue to explore key technological trends in Physical AI that are reshaping logistics, manufacturing, and mobility industries. Participants showed great interest in how the integration of sensor, AI, and control technologies is expanding autonomous driving systems—from warehouse robots (Indoor AMRs) to urban delivery robots and autonomous forklifts—enhancing industrial efficiency and automation.

“Joy of Work in Pangyo” is an offline learning and networking program designed to support professional growth and collaboration among Pangyo-based workers. It is held monthly at the Pangyo Techno Valley Startup Campus.
