Institut Pasteur Korea (Director Sung Key Jang, hereafter “Pasteur Korea”) announced on the 5th that it had launched an mRNA vaccine initiative in collaboration with other international Institut Pasteur to advance innovative mRNA vaccine research and development.

On September 23, Pasteur Korea signed a multilateral memorandum of understanding in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with four organizations: Institut Pasteur of France, Institut Pasteur Dakar of Senegal, Institut Pasteur de Tunis of Tunisia, and Bio-Manguinhos, a subsidiary of Brazil’s state-run Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) under the Ministry of Health.

The newly launched “Pasteur Network mRNA Vaccine Initiative” aims to develop effective mRNA vaccines and establish sustainable vaccine production solutions to address global pandemic threats.

Pasteur Korea plans to contribute to vaccine R&D through its proprietary platform technology, stabilizing mRNA molecules and reducing production costs.

Fiocruz, a member of the Pasteur Network since 2009, participates in the initiative through its Bio-Manguinhos subsidiary and collaborates with the Institut Pasteur in Senegal and Tunisia to develop vaccine R&D and production solutions.

The Institut Pasteur in France will cooperate in various areas, including vaccine R&D and technological platform support. Furthermore, each organization will discuss funding strategies for R&D projects and promote joint workshops.

Sung Key Jang, Director of Institut Pasteur Korea, stated, “We will work closely based on Pasteur’s platform technology to develop mRNA vaccines that ensure efficacy and safety,” adding, “In the long term, we will continue discussions and collaborations to enhance vaccine accessibility for underdeveloped countries and create sustainable vaccine production solutions.”
